Tour features
Five days sightseeing, camel safari and hiking tour from the red Imperial city of Marrakech to the south-Sahara desert. Erg Chigaga is the largest and still untouched Sahara sand dune in the Moroccan Sahara desert and located in the Drâa-Tafilalet area 60 km west of the rural town and oasis of M'Hamid El Ghizlane and south of the desert town Zagora. Up to 40km in width, some dunes in the south-Sahara desert are up to 300m high and are the largest, wildest and most unforgiving in Morocco. Jebel Bani forms the northern desert border, M'Hamid Hammada the eastern border, Erg Smar the south-eastern border and Iriki Lake, a dried lake set in Iriqui National Park the western border. Erg Chigaga is only accessible by 4x4, camel or on foot; therefore considered a romantic destination and a photographers dream.
Itinerary
Day one - Marrakech to Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou : After breakfast pick-up from your riad in Marrakech, cross the scenic Tizi n’Tichka High Atlas Mountain pass to Kasbah Telouet, guided tour, drive through Ounila valley to Ouarzazate for a traditional Moroccan lunch and mint tea, depart to Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO world heritage site), tour of Kasbah, dinner and overnight.
Day two - Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou to M’Hamid: After breakfast, depart through Ouarzazate to Draa Valley, Zagora, Tamegroute for traditional Moroccan lunch, M’Hamid for dinner and overnight in authentic Berber tents.
Day three - M’Hamid to Erg Chigaga: After breakfast, transport to Erg Chigaga via 4x4 vehicle. Upon arrival, guided hiking tour of surrounding sand dunes with local desert guide, optional sand boarding, picnic lunch on the dunes, evening entertainment of ethnic traditional North-Africa Gnawa music and dancing around a fire, dinner and overnight in luxury authentic nomad Berber tent.
Day four - Erg Chigaga: Sunrise climb up Erg Chigaga, after breakfast half-day guided camel ride into the sand dunes, picnic lunch in the desert, back to desert camp for evening entertainment, dinner and overnight in luxury authentic Berber nomad tent.
Day five - Erg Chigaga to Marrakech: After breakfast, transfer to 4x4 vehicle for return journey via Foum Zguide, Tazenakht, visit a local Berber souk for shopping on the way. Depart to Marrakech with traditional Moroccan lunch on the Tizi n’Tichka Atlas Mountain pass for late afternoon / early evening arrival back in Marrakech, drop off at your riad.
